YES 2016 Teespring Campaign

3/30/2016

Our Teespring has sprung! Featuring a front and back design by our very own Kieran Tom, this shirt represents the weekly traditional Pel vs. Conferee softball game on our home away from home, Star Island. "What makes the grass grow? Blood, blood, blood!" is a chant used every year by our team as we end our pre-game speeches and enter the field of softball battle!

Each sale goes towards our scholarship fund, which provides financial assistance to our conferees. For over half of our conferees, this is a key resource in being able to afford the cost of room and board on island.

Help us reach our goal of 20 shirts sold! This campaign ends Tuesday, April 19th, so make sure to get yours before time runs out!

Reunion Recap
We hope everyone had a great time at our So YESterday Reunion! Thanks to everyone who performed at Coffee House and to all of those who donated items to our Auction - we raised $550! 37 people joined in on our weekend, which is the highest attendance we have had at Reunion for a while. It was wonderful to see so much Star Island spirit which helps to break up the long wait until the summer when we can all be together again on island.

In connection with our throwback theme, we held a show-and-tell, played retro games, watched old VHS tapes, and shared our childhood nicknames! Our workshops included yoga and mediation, gym class, and arts and crafts! Michael’s awesome Social Action workshop on Saturday was about social justice actions from different decades and guest Jason Lydon from Black and Pink talked about working with LGBTQ prisoners and the organization’s efforts to get their voices heard. Remy led two great worships during the weekend challenging everyone to think about their strengths and weaknesses and to think about what they want most to get out of the new year ahead of us.

As always, please feel free to contact Bianca and Taylor at chairoftheyes@gmail.com and our registrar, Julia, at registraroftheyes@gmail.com if you have any questions. We are so excited for this coming year and hope to see you all soon!

YES Discounts

Discounts for YES are back! Star Island loves our conference and sees how important it is for the island to keep attracting new youth, especially us wonderful YES-ers! Now introducing, the YES Community Building Program! Here’s how it works:

1. Find that person (or more than one person) in your home, church, etc. communities you feel would be able to best contribute to the YES community on Star Island.

2. Nominate that person by filling out the form at:  www.surveymonkey.com/r/YEScommunity.

3. Once your application is approved, Star will cover 30% of the room and board for your New Shoaler, provided they attend the full conference (7 nights)!

4. Star Island will also kick in $50 toward your room and board, provided you also attend the full conference (7 nights)!

Our New Shoaler Flyer (included below) is a great way to pass along some information about our conference and the newly available YES discount. Please share this with any and all folks you feel would be interested in joining us for this special year!

Star Island Centennial
This year will be Star Island’s Centennial, and to celebrate, a 50 year and 100 year time capsule will be buried which will hold mementos about what life is currently like on Star Island. Every conference is asked to submit an item to the time capsule, and anyone can write a memory on archival paper available on island. The time capsules will both be sealed and buried during the island’s re-dedication in July 2016. Don’t worry, items will be collected throughout the summer and the off-season, which means we still have time to decide what we would like to include in the time capsule!

Stay tuned for more information on the time capsule, as well as registration and scholarship information which will be making its way to you all soon!

Island Recap

Our week on island this year was filled with so much positivity, fantastic sunrises and sunsets, and an amazing group of people. A big thank you to our amazing chair, Emily, and all of staff that made the week run so smoothly. There were 15 new shoalers on island this year! We were very happy to  see everyone being so welcoming and open and all shoalers come together to bond throughout the week.

Some of our wonderful worships lead by John included ghost stories on east rock, singing the two part barge song, belief sharing, and of course, grokking on the front lawn. During our workshops slots, we had romance on the lawn, pillow talk, spiritual play, art barn, and Shamanism, among others. Social action with Shaya went well and our guest speaker Justine did an awesome workshop on Enneagrams! The Pels beat us at softball again but our amazing coaches, Remy and Noah, kept the team's spirits high and looking forward to next year's game.

We shared our week with NHW and ISHRA for the last time this year (read more about the week change below). Thursday afternoon was our inter-gen worship that held the theme of friendship. Poems and stories were shared, songs were sung, and a few tears were shed. Though we are all very excited about the possibilities to come with our changes, we will miss our dear friends from NHW!

Our week was filled with meaningful conversations and joyous laughter, all of which we have our conferees to thank! We hope that everyone will come back next year to continue to make more memories, new friends, and exciting experiences to last a lifetime.

Week Change

Joe Watts informed the staff of our conference earlier this year that we would be changing weeks after our 2015 conference. The reason for this change is because a conference that left the island a few years ago is coming back and it needs its own week due to its number of conferees. Unfortunately, our conference being smaller in size, meant that it was easier for us to move weeks so that every conference could still have their time on the island. So starting next year, we will be sharing the island with the Star Gathering 2 (SG2) conference! The dates for next year are August 6-13th and we will most likely be the second week of August from now on. For conferees that have attended our conference at least one year and have a birthday between our usual last week in June and our new week, we will be allowing them to come an extra year when they are 23, if they choose, since they would be losing a year with this change.

Joe Watts invited Emily and ourselves back to Star to meet with the leadership of SG2 while they were on island this year. The board and Chair were very excited to talk to us about how we can collaborate together and make the week next year incredible for everyone! SG2 is a family conference and they have a high school youth group of 7 kids that are lead by two adults. The board of SG2 still has to officiallly vote on the idea, but their youth will most likely be joining our conference next year which would make programming easier for them and we would still be able to use all of our traditional spaces!

We are very confident that this new pairing of conferences is going to work out well. Of course this next year will be transitional- we may have to make some compromises or change our schedule a little bit, however we have been communicating with the SG2 Chair and youth group and are very excited about some of the ideas that we are working on! Let us know if you have any questions or concerns
